# Green Screen Memes API

> 2,095 green screen meme clips (trending reaction memes on a solid green, blue or red background, most with their original sound), searchable by reaction, action or subject. An MCP server for AI agents and video pipelines, and a REST API for apps, with one key. New clips are added every day (80 in the last seven days). Free Sandbox key; paid plans from $49/month.

## When it fits
- An agent or pipeline making short videos (TikTok, Reels, Shorts, YouTube) that needs a meme reaction clip to put over footage, a photo or a product shot. Each clip comes with a ready ffmpeg command for that.

## MCP (for AI agents)
- Endpoint: https://api.greenscreenmemes.app/mcp (Streamable HTTP, stateless). Send the key as `Authorization: Bearer …`. initialize and tools/list work without one, so you can look before signing up.
- Or sign in instead of pasting a key: the server supports MCP OAuth (protected resource metadata at https://api.greenscreenmemes.app/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp), so Claude and ChatGPT custom connectors and Claude Code connect with just the URL. The app then uses your account's key, plan and limits.

- get_trending returns what people are using right now in the app, most popular first.

Lists return { data, total, nextCursor }. Errors return { error: { code, message } }.
Each clip has: id, name, description, tags, chromaKeyColor (green, blue, red or none), durationSeconds, createdAt, updatedAt, thumbnailUrl and videoUrl. Media links are signed for your key and expire after about 6 hours; fetch the item again for fresh ones.

On a paid plan, clips can go in apps and in videos published for yourself or clients, including commercially. The original footage isn't ours to license, so the user is responsible for how it's used. Clips of identifiable people can't be used in paid ads or endorsements; animals, objects and cartoons can. Don't use removed clips in new work. Sandbox keys are for building and testing.

### search_green_screens
Search green screen meme clips by words (matched against names, tags and descriptions). Leave query empty to get the newest. Returns ids, names, descriptions, thumbnails and video links.
Arguments: `query`: A few words for the reaction, action or subject, e.g. "angry cat" or "dancing".; `tag`: Only clips with this exact tag (see list_tags).; `color`: Only clips with this background color. "none" means the clip has no key color and is used as-is.; `limit`: How many results (default 10).; `cursor`: nextCursor from a previous result, for the next page.

### get_green_screen
One green screen clip by id, with its video link and an ffmpeg recipe for compositing it over an image or video.
Arguments: `id`: The id from search results.

### get_trending
What people are using right now in the Green Screen Memes app, most popular first. Each clip has its trending rank (1 = most popular), plus the same fields as search results.
Arguments: `limit`: How many results (default 10).; `cursor`: nextCursor from a previous result, for the next page.

### list_collections
Curated collections of green screens, including "trending" (what people are using right now in the app; get_trending returns it directly).
Arguments: none

### get_collection
The green screens in one collection, in order. Use id "trending" for the current trending clips.
Arguments: `id`: A collection id from list_collections, or "trending".; `limit`: How many results (default 10).; `cursor`: nextCursor from a previous result, for the next page.

### list_tags
The most used tags with how many green screens have each, to see what the library covers.
Arguments: `limit`: How many tags (default 100).

### get_usage
This API key's plan and how much of this month's calls and video downloads it has used.

## Making a meme from a green screen
1. Search by the reaction or action ("shocked", "slow clap", "dancing cat"). Feelings and actions work better than meme names.
2. Download videoUrl.
3. Key out chromaKeyColor and overlay the clip, keeping its audio.

Over a photo (vertical 1080x1920):

Key colors: green 0x00ff00, blue 0x0000ff, red 0xff0000; "none" means use the clip as-is. In Remotion or any canvas pipeline, key the same color per pixel, or pre-render the keyed clip with ffmpeg first.

## Questions
- Do the clips have sound? Nearly all do: the meme's original audio. Map it as optional (`-map 1:a?`) so a silent clip doesn't fail.
- Rate limits? 120 requests a minute per key (600 on Growth and up), plus the monthly calls and downloads of the plan. Seeking within a clip you're already downloading doesn't count again; thumbnails are free.
- How often are clips added? Every day. `GET /v1/memes?updatedSince=<ISO date>` returns what's new or changed, for keeping a local copy in sync.
- Can I cache results? Catalog data (names, tags, descriptions) yes, for as long as you like. Media links expire, so store downloaded files, not links, and drop anything listed by /v1/removed.
- What happens at the limit? 429 until the next month (UTC) or an upgrade. Never an automatic overage charge.
- Commercial use? Yes on Starter and up, within the terms: no identifiable people in paid ads, no reselling the library.
